There are alternative natural fuels that can be used to power motor vehicles. The electric car is probably going to be the main vehicle type on city streets within the next ten years. The focus now is on the development of these electric cars and on the network of charging points which will be ecessary to keep them running.
Electric vehicles
Electric vehicles are in themselves environmentally clean. The question of course is what is the energy source that generated the electricity. If it comes from renewable, clean energy sources then the impact on the environment is minimal.
Hybrid vehicles
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has both a conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) together with a rechargeable battery (RESS). There are two main types of hybrid vehicles, a full hybrid and a Stop/Start Hybrid.
Using fossil fuels efficiently
Some cars have become very efficient in the way they use fossil fuels. Of course this is not a real solution to the problems of generating emissions, but it would seem to be a necessary interim stage to not using fossil fuels at all!
Vehicles using biofuels
There are various sources of biofuels which can be used in place of diesel or petrol.
